Film Ratings

‘15’
This rated wouldn’t be suitable for our film product as the violence used within our film would focus on pain being inflicted on a victim. Also the villain in our film is characterized as sadistic and twisted and therefore wouldn’t be rated at 15. However the drug use and strong language would be allowed but all the requirements must be met.
‘18’
This rating is the highest rating so our film must fit into its criteria. ‘18’ is the highest as the BBFC have to follow the Human Rights Act that adults should be able to choose what they want to watch.
This therefore means that our audience must be aimed at people over 18.

Typography

We have officially chosen a title for our film now and this will help me find typography which will suit the wording - we are calling the film 'Target 3.8'. We have chosen this name because it makes it clear that the situation in the film is organsied and has happened before- the word 'Target' sounds intimidating and the point in the number makes it sound clinical and as if this has happened before. The '3.8' implies the violence that will occur as it is not a whole number as you would usually put to a whole person.

As the title sounds clinical and organised, the typography needs to reflect that : this should look as if it is written on a document or written using a neat font.

This is the title written as caligraphy. This looks interesting because the words are creepy and the typography contrasts to this. I like that this type looks like a handwritting and fints with the idea that this is a document because it is written neatly.

The typography here is like a type writer. This is relevant as people (in hospitals, schools etc) tend to use typwriters or stamps to fill in documents quickly. The wirtting on a type writter relates to the clinical idea of the film - the typewriter look looks clinical as it would be on a document and this relates to idea that this situation is organised and has happened before.

This type is very similar to the last one but more word away. This type is interesting as it still looks clinical but older. This works well with the idea of the situation being organised but adds the idea that this is a long running idea; it looks like the work has been worn away and is decaying. This links to the idea of things being taken apart and the 3.8 part of the title.

Typography for Target

The use of typewriter font has become popular in recent films.
An therefore we decided to base our typography around different typewriter fonts. We have found a download for imovie which will  enable us to make one letter of the title appear after each other and therefore creating a typing effect. Imovie also already has the sound of a typewriter so we can change the speed of the letters appearing to fit the sound. This is the typewriter font we found. This would be good for our film as it has small smudges on certain
letters which links into our genre of psychological horror as it’s not too terrifying.

Example 1
As our film title is called target, we tested if having targets within the text would be good. This example uses 3 different fonts: “Rough Typewriter”, “Graf” and “Kosovo Targets”. This example still includes our idea about using typewriter font but adds in small details that link into the title. However the ‘a’ in Target feels out of place and random as the background of the letter is very futuristic and contrasts with the typewriter font. The point for the numbers is small and gives a small indication of guns or violence

Sound in Saw

The beginning of Saw begins with a low water sound. This can give an atmosphere which includes characteristics of being isolated out at sea. Water can introduce a fear of drowning or sinking, this could foreshadow that the film will be about struggling to escape death.
The fade in of a whining sound followed by the sound of two metals scraping together, for example a knife being sharpened. This creates a sense of tension and suspense as the tone is very eerie and unfamiliar. It could also be uncomfortable or even painful to the ear as the tone increases in sound and pitch.
The smash of a bass drum interrupts the quite water, this can cause a release in tension as the sound implies that the something bad has happened and that the build up of the whining has finished.
More intense water sounds and diegetic sound of a person coughing creates an understanding that someone is in the water and that they were struggling to breath.
The thud of the man falling out of the bath shows that he is weak and unable to control his body. This starts to create suspicion of why he was there and who had done this to him.
The diegetic sounds of heavy breathing and him calling ‘help’ also adds to the atmosphere of danger and the unknown. Non-diegetic drones are quiet under the diegetic sounds of his voice. This is like the sounds in the classic ‘Jaws’ sound track which builds tension.
Diegetic dialogue from another voice answers the man. His low echoing voice suggests an empty and cold setting. His speech is also slow and seems like it’s a big effort for each word, this creates more tension as it suggests that he has been there abandoned for a long time.
The piercing tones of the lights turning on are like the sound of a high pitched shotgun reloading. This can suggest pain, as it’s painful to see strong bright lights after being in the dark for a long time.

Production Companies

  • Hammer films - This film company was established in 1934 and is best known for a series of gothic horror movies (known as 'hammer horror') in the mid 20thcentury such as 'Dracula' and 'The mummy'. People tend to associate Hammer films with classic slasher movies but they have recently started to branch out again- 'The woman in Black' is a recent psychological horror film produced by the company (it is based on the award winning play). This film company would be good for our film because it has produced an award winning psychological horror film and we would benefit the most from this company.

    • Solar Films - Solar Films is a company based in Finland which specialises in films from the drama and horror genres. The company is relatively well know for making the horror films 'The Restless' and 'Dark floors' and the drama 'run sister run'. This may be good for our film because the film production company specialises in horror films.

    • Warner Bros - Warner Bros. Entertainment, Inc., also known as Warner Bros. Pictures or simply Warner Bros. (though the name was occasionally given in full form as Warner Brothers during the company's early years), is an American producer of film and television entertainment. They make many films in all genres such as the comedy 'hang over' and many others. They are also well know for making horror films- most famously 'The Shining' but more recently 'Contagion'.

    • Rogue pictures- This company was formed in 1997 with a goal of "high-quality suspense, action, thriller and urban features with mainstream appeal and franchise potential". They are most know for the horror film 'Chucky' and more recently the horror films 'Last house on the left' and 'The Unborn'.
    • 20th century Fox is one of the biggest film productions and produce a number of different genres from horror to family films. This includes the films Black Swan, The Omen, Ice Age and Alvin and the chipmunks. This may not be the best film production company to use because of the variety of films they produce. Our film is very specific and would be better with a production company which works solely with horror movies
    • Cross creek productions is an independent film production company set in the heart of California. They produce a range of genres with the company being most famous for producing the psychological thriller Black Swan.
    • First look studio is a small film production company which specialises in home movies. Films include Immortal and Priceless. This production wouldn't be good for us as it specialises in home movies and our film is not a home movie. (A home movie is a term for where films are either sold or rented for home cinema entertainment.)
    • Icon productions is an independent production company of which the famous actor Mel Gibson founded in 1989. Famous films include Passion of the Christ and Apocalypto. Icon produces a number of different genres from thriller horror to "rom-coms". This may be quite a good film production company for us because it tends to produce more horror films compared to comedy and romantic films, yet, in comparision to the other film production companies, there are better ones for our film.
Twisted Picture Productions is an independent film company who are known to specialise in horror films, especially known for the production of six sequels of Saw. This would be quite good for our film because the genre of our film opening is horror. Though Saw is a slasher movie and the other films the production company have made are thriller moves. This may not be ideal as it does not fit our film because the sub genre of our film is psycological and not the sub genres that have been previously produced above.
